Bilingualism doesn’t just happen
Claudia was born in Columbia but moved with her parents to the USA when she was a teen. She always knew that she would raise her future children bilingually, however she never had an actual plan in mind.
When Claudia’s oldest daughter was born the number one priority was sheer survival. Only when her baby was around one year old and all of her first words were in English, she realized that she hadn’t done much for her child’s bilingualism. Something had to change. Months and months after many hurdles and fallbacks, consistency and hard work, Spanish became the mainly spoken language in their family – even for her native English speaking husband.
